NRM is a Knoxville-based, woman owned, small business established in 1998 to meet the needs of engineering, construction and project support functions for Government and commercial clients. NRM has worked with the Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Brookhaven National Laboratory, Spallation Neutron Source Project, and the ORNL High Flux Isotope Reactor. Non-Government clients include the U.S. Enrichment Corporation, City of Knoxville, and the Metropolitan Knoxville Airport Authority.

Participant in Cutting-Edge, Multi-National Fusion Project

NRM provides engineering and design support to the US ITER Project.  US ITER is a DOE Office of Science project hosted by Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee. Partner labs are Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory and Savannah River National Laboratory. The US is a partner nation in ITER, an unprecedented international collaboration of scientists and engineers working to design, construct, and assemble a burning plasma experiment that can demonstrate the scientific and technological feasibility of fusion power for the commercial power grid. ITER’s other partners are the People’s Republic of China, the European Union, India, Japan, the Republic of Korea, and the Russian Federation.

Representative Projects

 

Spallation Neutron Source Title II and III Support

NRM provided mechanical, structural and seismic engineering; and design drafting support to the SNS Project. Tasks include design of steel and concrete structures including instrument caves and shield blocks, platforms, tanks and lead shielding structures. Additionally, NRM perfomed piping analysis and qualification and support design for the SNS Hot Cell, Shutter Hydraulic piping, Activated Cooling Water piping, and Target Protective System Conduit for the SNS Target Section. NRM also prepared calculations for seismic support designs for piping, conduit, cabling, tanks and pumps. NRM prepared Certified for Construction design packages, responded to Requests for Information (RFIs) from the AE/CM contractor, prepared Design Change Notices (DCNs), and reviewed vendor bids and submittals.

 

HFIR Engineering Support

NRM performed engineering analyses for various portions of the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR) Cold Source Project including designing piping systems for compliance with ASME B31.3 Process Piping Code, Expansion Joint Manufacturers Association (EJMA) Standards and DOE-STD-1020. Typical analyses include evaluation of cryogenic piping operations from -434˚F to 302˚F for thermal fatigue and concurrent seismic effects for compliance with the requirements of DOE-STD-1020 for PC2 and PC3 structures. Structural work includes qualification of concrete and steel buildings and equipment support structures using AISC Allowable Stress Design (ASD), ACI 318, ASCE 7, and the International Building Code. NRM performed design/build services for this project. We were the general contractor for installation of foundations, pipe supports and steel structures.

 

Brookhaven National Laboratory

NRM provided senior Electrical Engineering oversight to Brookhaven National Laboratory’s Arc Flash hazard and mitigation effort, requiring the review, documentation and analysis of building electrical systems and equipment to determine potential hazards. NRM provide seismic engineering support to perform the ten year Natural Phenomenon Hazards assessment for BNL’s Nuclear Cat III Waste Management Facility. NRM also provided structural engineering support to re-design a waste shipping container overpack due to payload and handling limitations at the disposal facility. NRM also provides independent design reviews of vendor calculations for waste container compliance with the Nevada Test Site Waste Acceptance Criteria.
